This has never happened before in men's handball: Germany and Denmark will jointly host an IHF Men’s Handball World Championship in 2019. From 10th to 27th of January, stars like the Frenchman Nikola Karabatic, Mikkel Hansen (Denmark) or Germany’s world-class left wing Uwe Gensheimer will rock the arenas. The path of the German national team start on 10th of January in Berlin - and shall continue via Cologne and Hamburg to the final weekend in the Danish handball hotspot Herning. Co-host Denmark starts his journey in the Royal Arena Copenhagen.

Great stage Berlin
Mercedes-Benz Arena will be the first epicentre of the Handball World Championship 2019 - with up to 14,800 spectators. The German team will play their preliminary round there, starting with the opening match against Korea on January 10th. Besides, Germany will face Brazil, Russia, Serbia and defending world champions France. Berlin and handball fit together perfectly: the modern handball game has been invented there in 1917, club world champion Füchse Berlin is one of the leading sports business cards of the German capital.

World class in Munich
Olympiahalle Munich breathes handball history: In 1972, it was the stage for the first ever indoor handball tournament at Olympic Games. With Yugoslavia as gold medallists - including their legendary coach Vlado Stenzel, who steered Germany to the World Championship trophy six years later. In 2019, many world stars of the present will be playing in the Bavarian metropole - whoever visits Munich may look forward to seeing current European champions Spain, former world and Olympic champions Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Iceland, Bahrain and Japan, now coached by Dagur Sigurdsson, who steered Germany to the EURO trophy in 2016.

Cologne: Memories of 2007
When the each three best teams from the preliminary rounds at Berlin and Munich meet for the main round at the LANXESS Arena in Cologne from January 19 to 23, memories of the electrifying winter fairy tale 2007 will come to life again. After eliminating Spain and France in the knock-out matches at Cologne, former national team coach Heiner Brand steered Germany to the trophy by a 29:24 against Poland in the final, attended by more than 19,000 spectators. In 2019, the top teams will fight for two spots for the semi-finals at Barclaycard Arena Hamburg (25 January) in Germany’s biggest multi-purpose arena close to River Rhine.

Hamburg: home of big handball parties
Hamburg had not only been a major venue at the 2007 Men’s World Championship up to the semi-finals, but since years, Barclaycard Arena is the home of the German Men’s Cup FINAL4 tournament. In 2017, the arena had hosted the final weekend of the Women’s World Championship - and both match days had been sold-out completely.

Speaking of memories: Looking back on 1978 - when Denmark hosted the Men’s World Handball Championship for the first time ever, it ended with the gold medals and the trophy for the team of the Federal Republic of Germany. If you would like to experience a new story like this, you should head to the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning on 27 January - for the final day of the 2019 edition.
